My Sawtooth 400MHz stop showing the gray apple logo loading screen when the mac startup. Otherwise its working fine. May I know is this a sign of some failure to come?

It wouldn't hurt to run the apple hardware test cd if you have it. I think you can also boot that mac in target disk mode if you just want to confirm that the HD is ok. If it's working fine though, I would just be sure to backup important data and move on. Also, have you installed any 3rd party apps recently?

To answer your question directly, I have never heard of a case where this was a sign of a future failure, in fact, I have never even heard of this happening.

If your computer starts in a resolution and/or refresh rate that your monitor does not support, you will not see the grey Apple logo. OS X changes the resolution after that part of the boot process and is probably changing it to a resolution and/or refresh rate that your monitor can handle. LCDs are more susceptable to this than CRTs since most LCDs are more limited in terms of resolution and refresh rate support.
