I am wanting to upgrade my borther's iMac DV currently with stock 10gb disk - and I want to upgrade it to an 80GB one
will the SEAGATE BARRACUDA 80GB IDE HARD DRIVE 7200RPM work in this model imac?
any ideas?

Yes, assuming it is PATA (most people refer to this as IDE) and not SATA.
Modern hard drives are more efficient than the stock 10GB drives which were fitted and so overheating is not an issue - I have a DV with a 120 GB drive and have had no problems for several years.

The version with a 2MB cache - yes. The 8MB one is hit and miss, because it runs much hotter - it will work at first, but the failure rate is high since there is no fan in the iMac DV (or so it seems IME).
