I've got a 20" iMac G5, and want to use a mic/headset to talk on Skype.

I've tried a headset but can't get the mic to work.

Obviously the iMac has a line in, but can this be used as with a mic, as it doesn't seem to pick anything up.

Any help/info would be greatly appreciated.

Adam

Line in only works with things like CD players, guitars etc, not mics. I don't know the explanation but that's it. If you want to use a mic you'll need a USB thingy like the iMic from Griffin technologies, or you could get an actual USB mic like the one from Logitech. That's what I have and I like it a lot. Works great in skype!

The signal level from an unamplified mic is simply too low.

I'm not sure why, but Apple have not put mic inputs on their machines for several years - odd when most PCs soundcards have separate line in and mic in - maybe it is because most macs have built in mics.

Same with Powerbooks. The Audio-In device needs to be powered.
