Within 1-3 months I should be adding a Western Digital 320GB 8M 7200RPM drive to my MDD 1.25 Rev C (June 2003). The 320GB is the best GB/price right now at $189 Canadian. I current have two Maxtor 80GB/7.2K/2MB(?) and 120GB/7.2K/8MB. I also have the stock Seagate 160GB that came with my MDD. The 120/160 are on the ATA100 while the 80GB is on the ATA66.

When I get the new 320GB to replace my 80GB (Music) and 160GB (Data) so I have one Data drive, I need to figure out the best configuration for the 80/120/160 for preformance. I will also need to move the 80GB or 120GB to my Beige as my new NAT for my network (has Asante 100BaseT card+ 10BaseT built in). Now what drive should be on what bus (320/160/120) for best preformance and speed, I also want to use one of them as a scratch/cache drive.

Thanks all for the help

Keep the boot drive and scratch drive on the ATA/100 bus, the other on the ATA/66 for best performance. Also make sure you keep the scratch drive 100% EMPTY and defragmented for maximum benefit.

I know you said you dont wanna buy an ATA card, but if speed & performance is your goal, adding an SATA-2 card & drives would be the best way to get it, as well as allow for future use in a newer mac should you ever consider moving up......

Well since I don't have money that is why I can't get it (else I would have a new computer). And as for drives in my next system I will only use Rapters so the SATA drives wouldn't be good that I get now anyways.

I'd put the 320 (data) and 160 (OS/apps/scratch) on ATA100 and the 80 (backup?) on ATA66.

Well plans have changed. I just got the Western Digital Cav 8MB 7200RPM 320GB this afternoon as an early present. So now need to figure out everything. 80/320 on ATA66 and 160/120 on ATA100 at present.

Which ever drive that you will be putting the OS on should be on the ATA100 bus. I would also recommend putting the drive you want to use as your scratch drive on the ATA100 bus.

160/120 are both on the ATA100 at present and the 80/320 on the ATA66. 120GB is OS/Apps at present.
