I pulled my hard drive from an old imac/400 and need to get the data from it. For the novice, how do I get it transferred to my ibook. What special cables etc...

Thanks

Which iBook revision?

I'd suggest buying an external enclosure.
If your iBook only has USB1, get a USB enclosure (only option).
If your iBook has USB1 and Firewire, get a Firewire enclosure (faster than USB1).
If your iBook has USB2, get a USB2 enclosure (cheaper than Firewire, speed will be limited by your iBooks internal disk).

I have an ibook/800 machine model powerbook6,3 ; cpu type powerpc g4 (3.3) if that helps. I have usb1 I think, and I have firewire. This is a one shot deal. After I download the data I'd ditching the drive. This said, is there a cheaper way to get the data out? A cable and software or something?

Thanks

You have USB2. I'd buy a $20 USB2 enclosure and keep the drive around as a backup drive.
I can't think of any cheaper way to do this aside from putting the drive in a friends machine and copying the data over the network.
