I currently own a 700 MHz G4 Flat Panel imac that I purchased in 2002. It is running OS 10.2.8 (and OS 9 on another partition). Although I want to upgrade my computer a little by increasing the amount of RAM and updating the OS, I am somewhat hesitant because the computer is fairly old and the money may be better spent on a new machine. I am wondering what your thoughts are about upgrading versus putting that money toward a new machine?

Thanks

I guess it depends on what you do on the machine. If you feel it is too slow for what you are doing, then ok, upgrading the ram will help, but only to a certain extent. If you need a big performance boost, go for the new one, you'll love it!

Also Tiger is a BIG improvement over Jaguar. Anyway, it depends as you said on what you do with the machine.

For the most part I use the computer for internet, word processing, and messing around with garage band. It does what I need it to do in the time I need it to. IF I do decide to upgrade my computer will I have to worry about it dying on me. In other words, what is the life expectancy for flat panel G4 imacs.

I would Max out the RAM For sure and upgrade to Tiger. If you want to a bit further you could also upgrade to a DVD burner and a larger hard drive though if you are not very mechanically inclined you would need to take it somewhere to have that done.

For what you are doing the G4 iMac would be fine.

Got a spare $500 laying around and love the unique design of your iMac? I'd updgrade the processor.

You can get Tiger and Ram for less than $300. If you are a student or teacher you get Tiger for $70.

So, the performance of that machine will improve noticeably. For your usage and needs I would think that is the best course.

Remember, Macs hold their value well so whatever $$$ you put into that iMac will make it more valuable.

Those things fetch a pretty fair price on ebay, still. You might consider selling it and using the proceeds, plus whay you would have spent upgrading it, on a newer machine. If you keep your eye on Apple's refurb page for a while, you can occasionally spot a prev. gen iMac G5 1.8 for a little over $1000.00.
