I currently have a "June 2004" Dual 2.0 Power Mac G5 that I want to swap out the Apple-supplied internal SuperDrive, a Pioneer DVR-106D model, for the newer SuperDrive that is shipping with all new Power Mac G5's, the Pioneer DVR-110D. Should that be a problem at all? Will OS X (v10.3.6) automatically recognize and support the new drive?

Any insight would be very appreciative.

Thanks!

10.3.6 probably won't. You'll need Patchburn for sure.

10.4.3 added full support for the DVR-109, and I think people are expecting 10.4.4 to fully support the DVR-110D as "Apple Supported."

So, just to be clear, I can use the "Panther" edition of Patchburn and have a working profile for the DVR-110D within v10.3.6, correct?

Also, even though the latest Power Mac G5's ship with the DVR-110D installed, it's not even fully "Apple Supported" within the OS in v10.4.3? That's disheartening.

I'm not sure about that. Toast should work just fine with the drive. You may need 10.3.9 for best results, though.

The DVR-110D in the Apple units has an "Apple Firmware." If you put the DVR-110D in your machine as is the machine will say "Vendor Supported." You can burn discs in iTunes and the Finder without Patchburn, and the iApps will work, but iDVD 5.0.1 won't do dual layer burning without a patch. (The patch won't work if PatchBurn is installed, but you won't need PatchBurn).

It wasn't until 10.4.3 that the DVR-109 became "Apple Supported" without any "tricks."

For the record, I replaced my original Sony drive in my dual 2 GHz G5 with 10.4.3 with a DVR-110D, and did not need PatchBurn, but I did need the iDVD patch to do dual layer burning. Everything else works, including the Finder, Toast, and the other iApps.

Thanks again Person Man, you have been a big help. I can update the machine to v10.3.8; however, not v10.3.9 as it doesn't play nicely with some machines managed accounts, as seen here:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301413

I do use Toast though, so it sounds like I should get along with no major concerns.
