Hey all,
I don't have time to call Applecare right now, so I pose this question. Sometimes (50-60%) when I start up, or wake, my G5 I get a wonderful noise that sounds remarkably like an external USB Zip drive. It is a buzzing that sounds similar to a wind up toy and lasts around 4 seconds. I have two internal 250gb Maxtor drives that came with the machine, and Disk Utility says they are both SMART verified. I have noticed some random system slowdown, but not enough to have had me thinking that there was a disk issue.
I am wondering if this kind of noise could be caused by a fan? And I wonder if this is worth running Apple Hardware Check. This machine does have the full 8GB of Ram, so the AHT takes around 7 hours.
On a side note, I just went to the System Profiler to get the Serial Number to check the AppleCare time left, and the serial does not show there or in the About this Mac window....strange.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks,
SAm

Could it be your Maxtors waking up, or indeed your fans kicking in? What makes you think it's a problem?

Well, I've had this computer for a couple of years now (Rev. A) and I have never heard this until recently. Also, it is LOUD when it does it. I use G5s at work and have never heard it there. I just realized that my system disks are at my studio, so hopefully I can get over there today and run the test later.

Either one of your fans or your HD are dying. Check out the smart status of your drives in disk utility. It could also be the fan on your gpu if you have one.
