So even the guys at AppleCare couldn't figure this one out....

my new Quad with the 7800 video card and it thinks there are TWO displays hooked up when there are not! I have not changed any of the preferences, and we tried deleting several preference and application support files just in case. I have a 23" cinema display and it thinks there is a 1024x768 CRT hooked up to it.

They also had me try to create a new user, but it still had the same problem.

Any ideas?

BTW Fed Ex is the devil and left my quad unsigned for IN THE SNOW for 8 hours until I got home...and when I called to complain they said they did nothing wrong. ugh.

I would get the video card replaced. Maybe it's romp in the snow is causing the problems? Go to your local Apple Store and see what a genius can do . Sometimes they can order replacement video cards.

I had this same problem! I have a Quad running a Quadro FX4500 graphics card and sure enough, the first time I fired it up it thought I had a second monitor. This went away after a reboot.

However, I think the problem was introduced by the fact that I used the migration tool to copy settings over from a prior Mac G4 MDD. I also noticed that my new Quad quickly ramped up the exhaust fans after a few minutes of inactivity.

Eventually, I broke down and reformatted and reinstalled Tiger. Lo and behold ... no problems! I now have a fast and incredibly quiet machine with no glitches.

So, I don't have an answer for you apart from recommending a reinstall of the OS.

Try swapping the port the display is connected to.
What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

There's clearly only one thing you can do, buy another display and attach it.
