After years of bad experiences with USB hubs, I bought a PCI Express USB 2.0 card from Aaxeon (actual manufacturer is Sunix) for my new Quad. It has four external ports and one internal one (not certain what one would do with that in a Quad). Currently, I have a Plantronics headset, a Motorola data/charging cable, and a Palm cradle plugged into it, all apparently working fine. I had a Griffin Radio Shark plugged in for a while, but it gets better reception when plugged into the front panel USB port. (Probably RF interference, not a USB issue.)

Despite PCIe being out for a while for PC's, I suspect PCI Express card sfor anything but RAID and video are still commanding bleeding edge prices ($96 including standard shipping for this one).

Does your PCI Express card allow SLEEP to function correctly?

I bought a IOGear PCI USB 2.0 GIC251U card and while everything works fine on the card, if I attempt SLEEP with anything conntected to the card I get a BLANK display, fans still run, and Mac won't WAKE & requires a FORCED Reboot. Apparently this bug in PCI or OSX is VERY COMMON with older Macs with no built in USB 2.0. My G4 2002 QuickSilver desktop 10.4.2 is stuck with this problem. I bought the IOGear USB 2.0 card to allow my daughter's 5th Gen iPod Video to sync with our MP3 library on this G4. I can use the card & iPod fine but can't sleep the machine with anything including the iPod.

It makes a difference if you have a newer Mac with built in USB 2.0.

Oh, that is weird, some people have said here that the same IOGEAR PCI to USB2.0 GIC251U card works great with no sleep issues. It is a pity since I was looking for a PCI USB2 solution and that model was on my priority list but since I was not able to find it in my country I went for a ASUS model that claims to be Mac compatible I have not received it yet so I can not confirm or deny if the ASUS PCI USB2 card works fine.

This one is half that price
, but it may be unsupported by OS X.

I am able to sleep the machine, but have not kept it asleep for any length of time (too many cron jobs), nor can I report on any problems with waking from sleep; I've only tried it once since installing the card last night.

Just to clarify:
My IOGear PCI USB 2.0 card does work fine with everything I have put on it including 4th & 5th Gen iPods.

I can SLEEP my G4 QuickSilver and WAKE it successfully with IOGear card installed IF NOTHING is CONNECTED to the card. If anything is connected (iPOD ejected or mounted but still connected) I get the BLANK dislplay, fans continue to run on G4 and G4 won't WAKE from SLEEP not matter what I do. FORCED reboot is only way out of this scenario where G4 won't WAKE.

Exaimining XLR8yourmac.com database on FIREWIRE/USB cards, this is about the case with all USB cards on older Macs without USB 2.0 built in on the motherboard (all but the very newest Macs). Some devices do still work without the problem but vast majority of combinations of cards & USB devices cause this problem. It seems to be a case of a bug in OSX or PCI itself where the PCI bus goes to sleep and can't recognize any handshake signals on WAKE.

This greatly reduces the value of the card for me. I kept it as it does allow my daughter's new 5th gen iPod Video to sync to my older G4 QuickSilver which had no USB 2.0 built in.

I bought 2 Belkin USB 2.0 4 port cards for my upgraded Sawtooth and I've had no problems even with sleep! I can keep everything connected to it and it sleeps fine.. I highly recommend belkin products!

So I got the card today… I plugged the iPod to transfer some videos and being honest I don't find it that 'speedy'… how could I know the transfer speed?, I would like to know that the card is actually an USB2 instead an old USB '1' card.

System Profiler just says 'usb', not mention to speed, and with the 'USB Prober' utility from the developer tools I can not find any mention to the bus speed just that the chipset seems to be from NEC.

Any clue from this picture?

You can, the System Profiler should tell you the speed of the card if you connect a USB 2.0 device.

Thanks for the hint, this is the info System Profiler shows:

USB section shows iPod:

PCI cards section shows this:

so I guess this is really a slow USB 1 card…
