Problem with upgraded optical drive on G3 iMac

I recently upgraded the CD-ROM drive on my ruby iMac with a DVD-ROM drive I got (the hope was to create some sort of TV replacement, though that project's fallen by the wayside). Installation seemed easy, but now I find a couple problems.

1. When I installed Panther (before I upgraded the drive), it didn't install DVD Player.
2. The drive recognizes plain old DVD's and CD's, but it doesn't want to read CD-R's or the like. Also, it takes a very long time to perform any optical drive function, with a lot of whirring stuttering.

I've researched this quite a bit, but have not found any satisfactory answers to my problems. Any one who can help?

You might be able to extract DVD Player from the OS X install discs using Pacifist.

That's bizarre it doesn't like reading CD-Rs. How many brands of CD-R does it reject? Hopefully it's just a problem with specific media.
