First of all happy new year to all!! My question is can you hook a mac mini to a conventional television set? if so how? i saw the mac mini setup thread (which are quite nice by the way) and noticed that some people are using flat screen lcd tv's for monitors.

Most new HDTV (LCD for mine) have a standart monitor/pc input out back. So you can simply plug in your Mac mini and use your TV as a monitor screen.

Can't wait for MWSF, to see what Apple does with the mini. I want to put one beside my TV also.

How about normal TVs (PAL)?

I was thinking of using the mini as an dvd-player-like device. I'd take it to my friend and hook it up to watch DVDs and the like.
Is this possible at all? I don't care about working with it at those resolutions, just enough to find the icon for iMovie (or whatever software) and doubleclick it

Happy new Year to everyone by the way =)
greetings. maikl

You could do that - you'd need an adapter to convert from DVI to the appropriate format, though (likely S-Video). You'd also likely need a minijack-to-RCA adapter for your sound.

Just remember that you'd want a keyboard and mouse to bring with you. If you're going to haul things over that way, get a relatively small mouse and keyboard set (preferably wireless) so that it's not a pain to bring with you.

Just as an aside: the Apple video out adapter for the Mac mini doesn't convert DVI signals to S-video, it simply signals the graphics card to output S-video in place of DVI.

In any case, Apple sells a cheap plug adapter that makes a Mac mini output to TV, as you could have found out by checking the Technical Specs or Accessories pages of Apple's Mac mini site.
