Hi everyone!
I got my PowerMac g4 sawtooth and i love it!!!
i finally installed panther (froze on iMac G3) and the whole experience is AMAZING.
its great, apart from the 20gb hard drive is really noisy at just running and reading and writing. im going to take out the 80gb from the iMac and put it into the G4, but i dont know if the 20gb will go into my iMac. My imac does IDE and my G4 says its drive is ATA. s i might have to put my old 6 gig in my imac...
anyway, will i need any extra leads for putting the 80 gig as the master and the 20 as the slave? does it have the leads i need inside to put the 20 as the slave?
thanks, kick52
PS my PowerMac kicks balls!
i will have pics later today (GMT)

Heh, I used to have a 400Mhz Sawtooth. Great machine, indistructable. I'd do some upgrades if I were you though.
BTW: iMacs need a firmware update in order to run OS X IIRC. That's maybe why it froze.

Don't worry, the 20GB and 80GB drives are interchangable. You won't need anything extra.

Sawtooth is a solid osx machine. I am continually surprised at how well it does as a text and internet machine.

i'm using it right now.
i dont think i will bother intalling any other disks in it yet. i'm not allowed to incase i might "screw it up" and the 80gb i have in my imac hasnt got the correct partitions, so if i copy my os x folder over, it will crash.
any way, about the changing disk thing...
what i wanted to do was put the 80gig in as a slave (and have the 20 as master) and backup all my stuff from the 80 onto my 20. then partition the 80 so it can run os x, and copy all my stuff back over again so i have all my os x stuff and os 9 stuff on the faster, quieter 80giger. then, so my imac can have a hard drive, put the 20 in there. but the thing is, will the imac be able to use the ATA 20? the 80 is IDE.
also if i were to have two hds in my AMAZING KICK ASS powermac G4, do i need another hard drive and power cable so i can use the second?
thanks for the help.

Yes, your plan will work fine.
Yes, the 20GB will work in your iMac.
No, you do not need any additional cables to connect two drives to your G4. Everything you need is in there.

i had a quick look in there, and the hd bus tyhats connecting the 20 has 2. but i dont know if the second one is long enough. if i put one in, i think i would have to put it on top, but there isnt anything so i can secure it on.
also, i'll ost pics soon.

The U-shaped bracket is meant for two drives, one on top of the other.

It should be pretty obvious once you crack the case. Use the screw holes on the sides of the hard drive to mount it above the one in the bottom of the two-drive bracket. The ATA ribbon will have one connector attached to your current drive, and another connector above it on the same ribbon. You can't plug it in backwards. Same for the power supply.
4 screws, two plugs-- done.
(you'll probably want to disconnect the current drive and take the tray out in order to get to it easily. There's a single philips-head screw holding the drive tray down to the chassis right under the ATA ribbon that's connected to the original drive. Unscrew that, and slide the tray about 1/4 of an inch towards the door. There are two tabs that fit in slots at the back of the tray, and they'll slide lose.
Oh, and here's an actual manual that has pictures: (about 2/3's of thew way down)

thanks again.
i had a quick look at that pdf at school and when i got home i had a look inside my pm.
looking at it, there is no hard drive caddy that supports another hard drive on top even though the cable looks like it does.
if i take the hard drive caddy out, its just connected to the bottom of the hd, and then slotted into the bottom with a screw aswell.
there is also another caddy that is screwed in to the left probably the spare.
UPDATE: ah, screw dial up. its gonna take hours to download that pdf....
i think that was for the gigabit ethnet... mines a sawtooth

ATA and IDE are the exact same thing (just different names for the same thing).

Huh. My Sawtooth has the exact same 2-drive sled as that Gigabit PDF. They were only a version away, anyway. Still, the ribbon and power plug should be there.
