Trying to transfer files via ethernet cable from a G3 to a G4. Have turned on file sharing for both computers but the G3 doesn't show up. Any assistance appreciated.

Is the cable a crossover?

Doesn't change anything. All G4 based Apple products have network cards that support auto MDI-X.

Except one of them is a G3.
Crossover would be good. Or a hub or switch.
Could you use a firewire cable or is this a regular requirement?

You only need one end to support auto MDI-X for a "normal" ethernet cable to work.

Yes, any cable will do if one Mac autosenses (the G4)
Are they both running OS9 or is one (or both running OSX?)
Is it a Beige G3?
So a little more info needed from you . . . don't want to cover every eventuality when it's not needed . . .

Older computer is beige G3 running 10. 2. Don't know what is meant by crossover cable; what I have is a network cable; connected one end to hub>G4; the other hub>G3, then tried changing the sequence. Auto MDI-X is something I haven't run into before. There is one ethernet connection per computer - perhaps I need a different cable or connector. I (blush) haven't gotten up to speed on Firewire; G4 has Firewire PCI. Thanks.
