I put a second video card into my old G4 tower and could use a second monitor with it. I loved this for video and picture editing - plus I always have a ton of stuff on my desk top.

I currently have a 20" iMac G5, and was thinking of getting a second little flat screen (17" or smaller), and was wondering if I could hook it up to my new iMac. Any special connectors needed?? Any recomendations on smaller CHEEP flat pannel displays that would work for me??

Thanks!
~John

The iMac G5 only supports mirroring (displaying the same image as the built in monitor) with an additional monitor. The iMac Core Duo supports spanning (giving you additional work area) with an additional monitor.

Core Duo is the CPU in the recently released Intel-based iMacs. You cannot convert an iMac G5 to the newer model. You can however add hack your current machine to add screen spanning with this litte app.

Bastards need to stop upgrading stuff so fast - my *new* computer is being quickly outdated!

Has anyone tried the split screen software?? Does it slow down your processor much? Does it work fairly well?

The spanning hack works fine on the G5 iMacs. Too bad it's VGA only though. DVI on the new Core Duo iMacs (along with official spanning support and the 256 MB option) truly is welcome.

Yes, that's the main reason I bought one of the new iMacs, and the main reason I never considered one before.
