Strange Problem with my QUAD

Hi everyone, I'm not sure if this a problem with OS X, or my QUAD, but all my other macs seem to run fine, so it might have something to do with my QUAD. Anyways, my computer hangs sometimes when I try to shut down, and when it does shutdown, upon restart I almost always have a folder in my trash can called "recovered files." inside this folder will be random files, usually associated with the last program I had running before I shutdown. Anyone else ever have this problem? I have a PB 15" 1.25 and I've never had this problem. I also had the 2.0 DP G5 and I also never had this problem. All 3 systems were identical in terms of OS, apps, mailbox settings, etc. This is really bothering me, any help will be appreciated. thanks

When it hangs on shutdown, does a little well large version of the round spiked cog that you see in Safari show on the blue screen?

Woops, I just noticed a double posted the thread. Any ways, everything goes away, and its the blue screen, with the little cog. It just keeps spinning forever. I'm not quite sure what you're referring to about the Safari cog. Its just the normal spinning/loading cog that you see on startup.

I was using Safari as an example with that same cog graphic description. Anyway its not your Quad, as I get it too but only since 10.4.4 but it doesn't seem to hinder anything not that I've seen anyway... checked the console in system log?
As for "recovered files" only time I see this is with Adobe stock photos and iChat with direct connection.

Could be System Files messed up. I would boot into Single Mode (Command S at startup) and run "/sbin/fsck -fy" then "reboot". Then repair permissions in Disk Utility on your startup drive and reboot again. Also, you may want to trash any preference files for the Safari or any apps you use, make sure you have backups of any settings you may need, or bookmarks, that kind of thing.

thanks for the advice Madman, I'll try that out once I get the chance. Hopefully it works. What exactly does "/sbin/fsck -fy" do?

Thanks Voo, that was an easy read, and I feel so much more knowledgeable.
More OT, MacNN is running horribly for me today! Its so slow, and it seems to hang (the loading watch appears) when I click on submit/reply/post new thread. Thats why I have all these double posts, etc. ....weird

Hey Voo, you had the noisey Quad, right? I remember reading about it, but I never got the end of the story because some people were just flooding the thread with stoopid remarks about your grammar etc. Did it ever get fixed? what was wrong with it? I think my Quad runs pretty quiet. I use to not be able to sleep with my DP 2.0 on, but I can with the Quad. Another aside, I've heard some people's dual cores had problems with the fan running constantly under 10.4.3. I never had that problem with my quad strangely enough, but I did have this problems with my DP 2.0... Weird

"recovered files" always shows up in the trash after a normal restart for me. It is just old Cache Files.

Hmmm. Sorry Madman, although it did find problems and fix them, I'm still having the same problem with the "recovered files"
Leia's Left Bun: You always have these files? I'm no computer expert but I'm going to assume then that you've always had a problem. I'm pretty sure that we both shouldn't have these files in our trash on restart... This is really starting to annoy me.

I don't get any recovered files on my Quad after a restart. Can you provide file names or more info on what the recovered files are? Are you running any third party apps or utilities or evn Widgets that might be the problem?

The recovered files tend to show up when certain applications don't clean up after themselves when they're shut down. I often get a lot of temp files form macromedia apps and adobe illustrator, and bbedit will leave a few behind from time to time.
If it's the system leaving these temp files behind (and not a third party application), you may want to run a utility that cleans out the system cache.

Well Madman, the problem seems to occur less frequently now, so I cant give any file names because I don't have any right now. As Himself said, it's usually files from apps like Photoshop and Safari. I'm not sure how to feel about other people having this "problem" as well...It doesn't make me feel any better about my situation, because I'm pretty sure all of us who are having this "problem" shouldn't be. I'm considering just backing up everything and doing a clean install....It's bothering me that much. Considering I upgraded to a Quad, my expectations were that it run flawlessly like the DP 2.0 it replaced, and the PB which I've have for over 3 years.

Before you nuke your system you may want to try the old process of elimination test. Reboot making sure you don't have any files in the trash then launch one application, do a few things then reboot to see if it left any files in the trash. Continue this process until you find which app is leaving the files. If you find that it is one of the apps you could delete it and all its prefs and reinstall to see if that corrects the problem. Just an idea.
