Hi,
I'm having problems with my Formac 1740 display and G4, and I'm hoping someone might be able to help.

I'm running the Formac from the ADC connector on my Radeon 9000 Pro video card, this was fine until a month ago when it died completely. While the display is connected the G4 will not boot up at all, and the display itself shows no signs of power, no lights or anything on either. The one noticable thing is that the power supply on the G4 makes a continuous ticking noise which goes away as soon as the display is disconnected.

The G4 istelf still runs fine with my other displays, my Dell via the DVI connector is ok and I've also tried a VGA display via the ADC connector using an adaptor which is also fine.

I can therefore only assume the problem is to do with the fact that the Formac takes power via the ADC connector rather than its own power supply, so a problem with the display itself or the G4's power supply?

Anyone heard of any similar problems or got any thoughts?

Much appreciated
Adie

Yep, we have had a number of these ADC powered monitors through our doors. ALL and every one of them exhibit the same issue. Basically, they're shorting out the power supply of your G4. We got the same ticking sound on the units we've tested and a no boot on the G4. Pull the ADC chord out and the G4 will boot just fine. My advice is to replace the monitor as it's probably not worth fixing. If you do want a new flat panel, try something from Apple or even a third party PC one driven by your svga output.

Well, I would replace the PSU, too. It's just a matter of time.

Thanks for your thoughts, the PSU was replaced on th G4 last year so hopefully that'll be ok for a while.

I bought a dell as a replacement anyway but was hoping I might fix the formac aswell and run 2 displays, not to worry.

Cheers
Adie.
