Just installed Win98 with OpenOSX Wintel 2.0.1 on my Intel iMac 17" with 1 Gb ram.

Screenshots here:

I am currently trying to install Ubuntu Linux as well.

So far the speed is not what OpenOSX states. It is alot slower despite the code being optimized for the Intel Core Duo.

The slowness is to be expected. OpenOSX is a software CPU emulator, not a virtual machine host. It's really not too different from running VirtualPC on a PowerPC machine. Maybe it would be useful to emulate an Intel processor on an Intel processor for debugging an OS or something, but it's a weird way to run regular software.
It's all about the cheese.

OpenOSX is a fraud. As the owner says;

iEmulator is a fraud too! It's just Qemu with an interface. Just use QemuX as it's free. OpenOSX is just Bochs with a pretty interface. Bochs is also free!

I don't think iEmulator is a fraud. They openly state their product is based on QEMU and they are not out there making false statements about it's speed.

As for building QEMU yourself, it's easier said than done on the Intel Macs. The Intel macs only support gcc4. QEMU is currently compiled with gcc3. Lots of tricky C++ code in QEMU breaks under gcc4 and fixing these issues is going to be a major effort. So, if iEmulator can ship their product in Feb (which i think is wishful thinking) they will have provided a very valuable service.

I purchased the WinTel OpenOSX, followed the installation procedures exactly as layed out in the tutorials and have never successfully installed Wintel on my MacBook Pro.

Repeated email quiries to OpenOSX have never been returned and their phone number ring off the hook!

Can someone out there help? Is there something that you need to do that's not part of the tutorials?

Thanks.

Just so you know, QemuX has recently merged with Q

FWIW, if iEmulator are selling QemuX/Q it isn't illegal or against the GPL if they remove any trademarked material, build it from source and supply the source code along with their build (there may be a few other things included in that list too). The GPL specifically states that people can do this. Of course, it is also good form for them to acknowledge the people who have done the actual development (assuming they haven't done any themselves). It would be even better form if they donated to these people to help them continue with their work.

P.S. Assuming that Q/QEMU are GPL OSS.

I'm asuming you are getting a catalog error installing Windows XP? This is a known bug in Q (which, not surprisingly, manifests the exact same way in the Wintel OpenOSX...I know, I've done it on both). Once the Q people figure out the problem and fix it, you can bet that the Wintel OpenOSX product will be fixed too... (you know, since it's the sxact same underlying code...)

Anyway, some people have reported success installing XP under Q on a PC or a PowerPC Mac and then moving the image to the Intel Mac and running the emulator there. I tried loading OS X using Q on my PowerMac and when I run that image (on the PowerMac or the Intel Mac) it boots to a desktop image with no start bar or icons.

When I try to install XP on a Windows box (running Q) the install crashes part way through the install.

So, I have so far been unsuccessful. The OpenOSX people have been completely unresponsive to any e-mails I have sent them.

I do not recommend anyone else spend their money on their product. Q works just as well and is free.

I puchased Wintel from them and tried installing xp multiple times and jumped through all of there hoops on the support. I have a tried on a MBP, pwrpc iMac and mac mini all with no sucess. It is amazing that they can take your money without providing a working copy of software that their website claims works just fine. Buyer beware....
