I have an eMac 1.25 bought around Jan 05 and I want to get an extrnal HD for backup but don't know if I have firewire 400 or 800. Does anyone know or can tell me how to tell?

You have FW400. FW400 has a squarish connector with a triangle tip. FW800's connector is much more boxy and much smaller.

The only macs with firewire 800 are the Powermacs and Powerbooks (15" & 17")
