I am shortly going to get a iMac core duo, but i have a choice weather I go for 1GB of ram or 2GB I can get more as I will have the cash but I was wondering would I see a massive increase with 2GB or not?

Please bear in mind I mostly use the fellowing on my iBook, iWork and all the normal bundled applications i also will be getting Adobe CS when its relised in UB,

1gb is good, but if you can afford it, go for the 2gb. It'll allow you to run more programs consecutively without bogging down due to page file swapping.

Get 1x1GB from Apple. If you find that it's too slow, get another gig from your memory vendor of choice (I like Crucial).

I agree with mduell, get a gig from apple, and if that doesnt meet your needs get another gig stick from a third party dealer.

For the price Crucial has one 1 GB sticks, it's better to just get the 2 GB upgrade from Apple directly (and yes, there are other brands out there, but frankly I don't trust them).

The upgrade from 1x1GB to 2x1GB from Apple is $200. 1GB from Crucial is $169.

Slow with your stick, sir...I thought you had to fill two slots with RAM on these new iMacs, that they didn't have RAM soldered on the board anymore; if that'd been true, then $338 for 2 x 1 GB sticks would be more than $270 for 2 x 1 GB from Apple.

From what I am hearing buy a no-options iMac (512MB) then buy the 2GB from Crucial.

This way you will be able to return the thing and get a new machine if something goes wrong, assuming you can stomach the cost of having a redundent memory module lying around, collecting dust . I have heard that Apple do not accept back custom built Macs (am I wrong?) Or you could of course sell the stock memory on eBay!

I would get 1gb for now and get another 1gb when adobe cs is UB (2007 I hear), the prices will be cheaper by then (hopefully) and you won't notice much benefit until you get CS anyway.
