I recently received a hand-me-down G5 tower from my work and my boss even ordered me a 300 gb internal HD for a little upgrade.

My co-worker said it was extremely easy installing a HD in the tower and since I'm pretty good with taking things apart and putting them back together again I decided to install it myself instead of dropping off the tower for half the day at the IT guys office.

i shut off the computer to take my first peek at the guts of the tower and was horrified to see so much dust! this thing is nasty, i couldn't even blow off some the encrusted dust off the top portion of the tower where the HD and fans are.

all this dust can't be good for the computer! what will happen if i can't get rid of it properly? what is the best way to get rid of it? is canned air safe? is it really OK to blow canned air underneath the HD (the green exposed part) and all of the other components inside the computer?

now i'm also a bit concerned becauseI did a little research on the HD my boss ordered and I read a lot of bad reviews on it! Mainly that the HD gets too hot and fails within months. There was some really good comments and lots of bad ones! But most of the people that had good reports said that the people with the HD failures probably had inadequate cooling.

does having 2 HD's in the tower make it that much hotter? i trust Apple's design and engineering but I'm still a bit uneasy with the bad reviews on the hot HD and my lack of knowledge on Apple hardware, along with my own tower's dust problem makes me really concerned.

here is the HD by the way and most of the bad comments are after the first page.

thanks for your help

Your computer will explode!!!

One important thing to watch when using canned air is that you don't blow dust into your optical drive.

I used to work at what I like to think is the coolest independently owned Mac specific store in Allston, MA. It’s called the Computer Loft and it's like walking into someone’s very cool playroom that happens to be packed with new and used Macs, guys fixing Macs and eating, drinking (non-alcoholic beverages, or course, and occasionally smoking).

Not sure if the boss is as lenient now as he was then, but the general rule was as long as you got your work done, MULTI-TASKED, and didn't frighten the customers, you were cool.

Anyway, when taking Macs in for repair, I came across some of the most heinous cases of dust collections imaginable. My boss would get pissed if we used air cans to clean them and rightly so - those cans are expensive - so what we used to do was take the offending Mac outside (who wants all that crap inside?) and use an industrial strength vacuum cleaner with a hose-like attachment to suck up as much off the gunk as possible. Once most was gone, we'd reverse the direction to blow air and, being careful not to blow any dust INSIDE components as Mark points out, get the remaining dust out.

Does this help? Not sure, but it was fun reminiscing.

Seriously though, if you use canned air, also be careful when spraying close to chips and mobo parts as once in a while the cans will blow freezing air instead of the normal cool air you expect. This can hurt fragile chips.

Now go clean that monster.

To dislike Sinatra is a sign of highly questionable taste. To dislike the Beatles is a serious character flaw.
