Hi All,

Just got in a 4-drive 1-TB Xserve RAID here at work. I was reading through the manual and it says you need to setup a fibre connection for a host computer (in order to run disk utility and give the RAID set a file system). However, we have no such abilities here, and nothing in the budget for additional equipment beyond what we've already got.

My question is, can the host connection only be established through the fibre channel?

I read in the manual for RAID Admin that you can actually have diskutil run from the command prompt in order to give the RAID array a file system.

So, how can I do all this?

Thanks in advance

Uh, how did you plan to access your Xserve RAID without a computer with a fibre channel controller?

You can still access the raid via ethernet to setup administrative functions, and neccessary configurations, but file I/O is done via a fibre connection to a server.
Client > File Server > RAID, or Client > RAID via fibre.

OK, guess that answers that.

Looks like we'll return the Xserve and look for a different option.

It sounds like you're looking for NAS, not a SAN product like Xserve.

What we were looking for was a combination development server, and fast & redundant data backup server. We trust Apple stuff (all use G5's in the office).

But, if we need a $600 fibre channel card just to setup a file system that we don't have the budget for, then, we'll look elsewhere.

I think you can use the "[d]ual 10/100BASE-T Ethernet for remote management" to create and manage arrays, but you need a fibre channel card to transfer data to/from it.
It's not a NAS product that you can connect directly to your network for file transfer; whoever ordered it should know that.

The fibre card is around $500. One thing to you will realize is that the Xserve RAID is realy cost competitive in comparison to other storage solutions. I have one and I love it.

I know it's cost-competitive, that's why we got one!

Ok now I try and convince the higher-ups. :o
