I am considering the purchase of a 20' imac however I am concerned about the 'afterlife' in about 4-5years when the computer is outdated and too slow. The computer will be outaded but the screen should still be fully functional.
Do you think it will be possible by then to somehow resuse the screen with anothter computer ? Do you think a third party will find a way to modify the imac to accept a DVI input and be used just as a monitor.
Thoughts, comments opinions ?

If you are worried about it getting "outdated and too slow" the best thing you can do is not to keep it that long. Just Keep it a year or two (maybe a bit longer, you have to judge it right before the floor drops out of resale values) and use the cash to put towards a new one (you should get about 3/4 to about 1/2 the cost). The old one will be fast enough for someone.

In 4-5 years, LCD prices will be rock bottom - just look at how much they have come down in price so far, you can pick up a 17" DVI LCD for less than £130, so in 4-5 years I assume it will be incredibly cheap to buy an LCD, so you could buy one instead of trying to re-use the iMac one. Just go for it - computers get old and slow - its virtually nature, and the screen in the iMac certainly isn't the most expensive part in there...

Yeah, I was thinking of the same thing. Seems a waste for such a beautiful screen...
If a third party found a way, I think they'd make some money - there's a LOT of flat panel and G5/Intel imacs out there....

I doubt it. The value of the old iMacs exceeds the value of the screen they include. You'd be better off selling the iMac and using the cash to buy a bigger/better LCD instead of trying to get the iMac to accept video in.
