I inherited an old Indigo (G3 500) iMac that I plan on giving my daughter. I haven't had a chance to play around with it yet, but I remember that the CRT iMacs didn't have any (hardware) controls for adjusting the display area. Do I have to live with the quarter-inch or so area of unused space all around, or is there a hack that will let me adjust the display area?

You could adjust the screen parameters in the Display preferences in OS 9. I would imagine the same still holds true for OS X but I can't say for sure.

I could adjust the resolution, sure, but not the active area itself. I could live it with it, but 13.8" viewable is small enough already without losing any additional space.

I'm pretty sure the geometry controls are there in the Displays preference pane.

On a correct operating system install for those macs you have the Geometry tab or button that lets you set position, size, pincushion, rotate, keystone, parallelogram settings. That is in both osx and in classic, and if you don''t have those options something is missing from the install on the drive. I used to run mine right to the edges but the settings drift out a bit over time and you sometimes have to change rotation or size to stop clipping on the edges.

There is a reason for that frame. Both geometry and color correctness are much worse near the edge.

And I also remember that those geometry controls were missing in some installtions. Probably were there in 10.3 and 10.4, but they were missing at some point.

Well, I finally got around to booting up the iMac (after a fresh install of 9.2.2). Sure enough, the geometry controls are there and worked fine. Now I have to find some RAM so I can eventually get OS X loaded (it only has 64 MB).

I'm not worrying about color accuracy and distortion near the edges of the screen--this is a for a 4-year old, so it's fine
