My knowledge about Macs is probably average.

I have a vague feeling that the current Macbook Pro and Intel iMac are models that will be short-lived, ala Yikes. I am seriously considering an Intel iMac and would like some input from someone who knows more about hardware than I do.

Does anybody have any facts to support this wondering?

Thanks.

What about them makes you think they're products that should be shortlived or what about them makes you think they're stopgaps?

According to benchmarks, they seem like incredible deals...unlike the 'Yikes' G4s which were crippled and terrible deals.

The only disadvantage is if you need the computer for CPU-intesive apps that can only currently run udner Rosetta.

Given the facts that:

- the Intel chipset in the iMac / MacBook Pro won't have a replacement until 2007
- the chip is in a socket

...I'd say it's a very safe choice.

Well, the current iMac form factor is now almost 1.5 years old, so it's fair to imagine that sometime in the not-too-distant future they will do a big makeover. That doesn't make the current machine a Yikes!, though. It is probably the best-equipped iMac ever, when you consider that for the first time it really has a decent graphics chip and plenty of VRAM. Nothing in the architecture seems rushed, or forced, or anything.

Of course, the processors will continue to advance; I imagine Merom will replace the Yonah within a year. But that's always the case. The sytem seems solid to me. If I weren't sitting with a 6 month-old rev B, I'd be all over it.

One thing that really impresses me about the new iMac is the power consumption. Most discussion has focused on comparing the performance of the Core Duo vs. the G5, but I can't get past Anandtech's measurements of system power consumption that showed the Intel iMacs consuming something like 30 fewer watts than the G5. Given all the cooling and fan noise problems the G5 iMacs had, it would seem that the Intel transition has enabled the current form factor finally to reach its potential (noise reports on the new machines would seem to bear this out as well.) And that comes paired with a definite boost in overal performance, even if the exact amount of boost is arguable.

No sir, not a Yikes! at all.

It gets even better when you put those two together: The next generation of chips (Merom and friends) will start off using the current chipsets (since, as you say, Santa Rosa won't be out until 2007), so drop-in upgrades may be possible.
