So after an unfortunate event involving part of my DVD library, I have decided to start backing up al my movies. I have the newest iMac that came out before the Intel ones. Does anyone know how to get this to work? I have ripped the DVD using MacTheRipper and I burn the VIDEO_TS file just as it appears on the original DVD but it doesn't work. Is there something I'm not doing right? Thanks

You need to burn a DVD Video instead of a DVD Data.

To make an exact duplicate, use Disk Utility, create a new image ( .dmg) of your DVD and then simply burn a new DVD, by placing a blank DVD in the mac and click the burn symbol.
So setup of formattting needed. It' "auto-mac-tic" !
The copies I made run great, even in older DVD players.

goofticket are you sure that works? DVDs are protected with encyption, and the only way to break that is to use CSS such as Mactheripper or 0sEx.

TubaMuffins,

Use MacTheRipper or 0SEx to rip a DVD Folders copy of your dvd, then use Toast to burn a DVD data disc of thw Video_TS and Audio_TS folders. Make sure the name of the DVD is all caps with no special characters except underscore (_).

No dashes, nothing. Just all caps and underscore.

Waking Life = WAKING_LIFE

Dad's New Toys = DADS_NEW_TOYS

Get it?

i have toast 6. Every time I try to record the dvd. It always says that there is not enough space on the dvd+r. I have the new MBP. The video_ts folder is about 7gigs and the disc is said to hold around 4.5 ... i thought toast was suppose to compress automatically?

Ditto for me.

My kids have ruined so many movies, its not even funny. So I make a backup immediately when I buy a new one. Im new to macs and this was a minor concern of mine (dvd burning). On my pc, I used shrinkdvd + nero and everything burned flawlessly. I only had 1-2 bad burns ever.

So I got toast with my new mini and after using mactheripper I went to burn and got the insufficient space notice. (Im using single layer 4.7gb, dual layer still to pricey for me)

So I downloaded a copy of dvd2one. Its a 30 day trial but only lets you do movies under 2hrs on the trial. I did a trial burn of a movie I already has that was less than 2hrs and it worked fine. So I paid for the serial to unlock the full version.

I burned a new movie that was over 2hrs. It seemed to burn fine but when I played it back it froze up about 15min from the end of the movie. This happened with a couple of different movies.

This is making me seriously think about using bootcamp just to be able to back good backups.

toast should automatically compress the movie if it is more than 2 hours and you are burning on a 4.7 single layer disk. when doing video/ dvd video from video_ts there is as button to the lower left that says "fit to dvd video compression" this compresses it to fit on a 2 hour disk. that is the way it is on toast 7.
