How many of you have experience the same problem with your iMac G5?

If I plug in my 3rd party Firewire DVD burner (3rd party enclosure with LG/Hitachi DVD burner) into my iMac G5 2.0's 1st Firewire port, everything works fine.

If I plug in my 3rd party Firewire drive (3rd party enclosure with LG/Hitachi DVD burner) into my iMac G5 2.0's 2st Firewire port, either it doesn't work, or else DVD playback is very jumpy, or else I get a kernel panic.

This is consistent. FW#1 works perfectly. FW#2 causes all sorts of problems. However, this is only with one specific item.

FW#2 works perfectly with my external FW hard drive and my camcorder.

The really weird part is if I plug a hub into FW#2, and then plug the DVD burner into the hub, it works just fine.

I haven't had that, no. Perhaps the connection to the motherboard is a little flaky somehow. The short answer is to just avoid using the port in a way that causes you problems.

Here's a slightly longer answer.

Step 1: Continue thorough trouble shooting, i.e. maybe you should also verify if the burner in question causes no problems with FW ports on other Macs/PCs - just to be sure it's not the bridge in the external enclosure or the burner itself.

Step 2: Run hardware test disk to check MB for any other issues.

Step 3: Take it in to get a MB replacement.
