I just found a soccer-ball iMac for my mother and the hard drive appears to be on the blink. Are there any tutorials online that walk someone through this procedure? Do I need a special kind of HD (laptop, etc) for this, or will a normal IDE HD work?

There are sites that have instructions on how to do this. You can go here and download the manual for it. I think this has the directions to open it to replace the drive. http://home.earthlink.net/~strahm_s/manuals.html
