Hello Everybody,

I was given a Mac G4 this weekend. When I power it on (boot), the monitor shows a small folder with a smiley face on it then a "?", then the smiley face then the "?", etc.

That's all that ever happens and I cannot get past that screen. What's wrong? Does it mean that the OS is not installed?

Thanks for your help,
Bruce

It basically means that it can't find a valid boot system, which could happen for many reasons. Try starting it up while holding down the option key, and see if it comes up with icons for any valid systems. If so select one and continue booting. I've had this happen on a number of Sawtooth and Yikes G4 machines.
