The day I get a replacement iMac, they release a software update that is supposed to fix the problem I sent the machine back for in the first place.

10.4.5 (Intel) update hosed my OS.

The update "froze" my computer for 24 hours before I decided to force a restart via the power button. I use quotations around froze because I still could move the mouse and click on Dock items, but those Dock items would just bounce after being clicked, nonstop.

Restarting put me into a command line where Mac OS X, seemingly, was trying to repair itself. I couldn't make anything out as the text flew by entirely too quickly. This process seemed to enter a loop, and did not stop for hours. Subsequent restarts led to the same.

I recognized the command prompt was running this as root from the following appearing on the screen: #root

I know that my data is OK, but without an OS to access this data it is useless to me currently. Primary goal is to secure the newest data from the computer; secondary is restoration of the OS.

I am about to call Apple support.

I have plenty of knowledge about Unix and Mac OS X. so I'm not asking for advice; just letting the community know that this happened.

Sorry to hear that dude. I know you said you're not asking for advice, but just a suggestion, you said primary goal is to secure the data - will it not boot into target disk mode, which you could then use to transfere your data onto another computer (assuming you have another computer)

I just got off the phone with Apple support. They recommended doing an Archive & Install after attempting a few solutions. I'm doing that now.

Target disk mode is a good idea: one that I did not consider. I'll remember it for next time.

I can only get the plugin to register if I run Safari under rosetta. Are you able to get it to run "native" or am I missing something?

My software update didn't even pickup the update. I had to download and install manually, hope SU works in future.

10.4.5 running fine otherwise.

When I first rebooted after getting the update. I first got what looked like something similar to the old Open Firmware screen. A grey background with my HD's icon and name in the centre of the screen, I had to click on it before the boot would start, this was even before the 'grey Apple' timer screen showed. very odd.

Flip4Mac needs an update from them for an Intel/universal version of the QT plugin for it to work on Intel Mac's, nothing Apple can do there.

I read that 10.4.5 conflicts with iTunes 6.0.3 . . . . is that right?

Well like all the functionality of this usefull thirdparty USB input driver. I have it bacause Logitec havent done an Intel version of it's mouse drivers yet.
Non of the additional buttons on the mouse functioned, the tracking speed was all over the place and the scroll wheel was behaving differentely.

Quicktime is native, it doesn't need to run through Rosetta.
Any PowerPC only application will automatically be run through Rosetta.
