As I don't have the latest Intel iMac, I guess my option to connecting an additional display to my iMac is using the spanning hack and VGA (non-DVI).

Are there others here who have done so and what is the display quality like? Is the digital signal that much better?

I'd be using it primarily for 2-D stuff like Illustrator/Quark and occasionally PS (but no colour calibration required).

I've used a few LCDs with both VGA and DVI connectors, and the VGA looks ok until you try DVI. The difference in crispness/sharpness/not-fuzzy-ness is amazing.
