i need your help solving my friend's emac problem. he lives over 200 miles away from the nearest apple store and his emac isn't starting up and so he has no internet access.

the problem:

1. no boot chime
2. he says he hears the typical noise one would hear when a CRT is turned on but,
3. no video
4. he also notes that the fans do not turn on.

no power outages recently, and the machine is about a year old. he would take it to the apple store ASAP but he currently has back problems so he can't even carry the thing! (i've never used an emac, but i guess this thing is pretty heavy?)

to me it sounds like a major HW failure but specifically diagnosing the problem remotely is tough.

oh yeah, he says he zapped PRAM and reset PMU with no success.

I have had a simular problem with a emac suddenly unable to power up. It did get a power glitch. No power no video nothing..

I replaced the down converter board that is connected to the logic board and it powered up.
This is no trivial task as you have to remove the cover and gently take out the power cable. discharge the CRT (important) remove the fan assy, sheild, CDROM, and then remove the logic assembly and take out the logic board. It took me about two hours the first time I did it.
Be carefull not to twist the down converter board when installing it.

Question: How is your friend at doing this kind of task?
