Hello forum!

I was arguing a lot whether to buy a Dell or not.

I've got Mac experience since my first Mac was an iMac G3 indigo 500 back in 2002.

Since then I had an iBook G3 14-inch (1st gen.), an iMac G4 17-inch, an eMac (don't ask) and a PowerBook G4 12-inch (also 1st gen.).

I started with Mac OS X 10.1, then got 10.2, 10.3 and the latest version, 10.4, on a Mac mini combo.

After four years and ending up with a Mac mini 1,25, I conclused that OS X is not really ready (at least for me), although I love Macs and I love OS X deeply.

Then I sold the mini on eBay and ordered a Dell Dimension desktop with Display. Like a sign, my credit card wasn't charged right due to a different shipping adress which couldn't be handled properly.

Then I went into myself and took a deep breath, looked for used Macs on eBay. I thought back and forth, and finally bought a used Quicksilver (2002) 933 with 768 megs of RAM, a 60 gig HD and a superdrive.

This was the system I always wanted to have in 2002 but couldn't afford.

Today I went to a local warehouse and bought a Samsung 19-inch TFT (8 ms) in addition to the PowerMac.

It's becoming like the realisation of a dream.

Can somebody understand my inner fight and just let me know how you think about it.

Was it a bad or a good idea?

Please let me know - it's really been a mental fight good against evil.

Thanks for your time.

Thought this was really dorky spam at that point. Good thing I kept reading, congrats on your Quicksilver. Another computing experience saved from the darkside.

i understand where you are coming from. i recently put together a relatively cheap but quality pc together and thought that would be the end for my 350mhz g3. not quite. as a matter of fact i'm on it now. the problem is that i much prefer os 10 over xp (if that's even a problem). so unless i'm watching a dvd or gaming for a bit, which i don't do that much, i'm probably on my mac. i don't know if vista is going to be all that it's cracked up to be, but with xp it's going to take more then some faux dock and window blinds for me to really use my windows box regularly. so if you do really love the mac os and don't plan to do anything really cpu/gpu intensive the quicksilver is probably a good choice.

...now i gotta wait for the new ibooks...

thanks a lot, at least three people got me... :-)

@stewartsgingerbeer: i really love os x and don't plan to do that (cpu/gpu-intensive). of course, things always could be faster, but i'm not depending on it (right now).

the coolest things over the mini are the L3-cache, the faster harddrive and the expandability. i guess it will not be much slower, if any, than the mini.

and then the design - i love the quicksilver design (who else by the way?)...

thanks for your support.

ps: i use my mac mainly for websurfing, e-mailing, itunes, iphoto, and as soon as apple is releasing new isights - if anytime - also for ichat av.)

pps: i'm also waiting for the new intel ibooks. ;-)

I've been running a DP800 since April of 2002. I upgraded the ram to 1.25GB, added 240GB of HDs, and added a Radeon 8500 video card.

I do email, some web site development, and a tiny bit of video. I'm ready to upgrade now, but the whole intel switch has me wondering if I should buy a Dual G5 now or wait another 10 months and buy an Intel PowerMac when they come out later this year.

You sould enjoy it, but I would max out the ram now and possibly swap out the HD for something running at 7200rpm or faster.

G5s will compute circles around your PM, but that doesn't mean that it isn't a decent machine by any standard. Enjoy it.

I'm a bird. I am the 1% (of pets).
