Looking for opinions
Looking for a PowerMac to replace an aging ahem ... "Motorola Starmax frankenmac G3" at my satellite office. In my earlier post, I mentioned that I'm in the market for a new G5 mac. The intel switch has really made me reconsider though ... What do y'all think of buying a strong DP G4 that will boot into both OS9 and X to serve as an "in between machine" until the new towers (and software for that matter) are ready? Another plus would be keeping this machine to use as a "classic only" system after buying an Intel Tower down the road. Used prices on topped out G4 units are very $$$ attractive too. I'm thinking of picking up a Quicksilver model.
Of course the other thought is just going ahead and getting a new G5 and using the classic environment for the older stuff.
It's just a judgement call I suppose. I do like the idea of having one of the fastest macs to boot OS9 on hand down the road.
Thoughts?

I have a single 1.25 GHz MDD with 1,25 GB RAM, you can not believe how fast Mac OS 9.2.2 runs here. But in opposite to the Quicksilver Power Mac models, there are no longer CPU upgrades available aimed to MDD Power Mac, not that you are going to need one, though.

These machines are overpriced on the used market precisely because they'll boot OS 9 and there are quite a few folks out there who still need to. Lots of print houses with proprietary rips that'll never be updated to OS X, etc. Unless you can turn up a used dual G4 for under about $600.00, you'd be better off saving your money for a G5 if you really don't need to boot OS 9. There's no reason why a PPC G5 won't last you years into the future. Sure they're no longer the absolute fastest CPUs onthe planet, but they're still pretty serious powerhouses.
Also, all thsoe G4s are aging, out of warranty, and parts are going to start getting scarce.

Just get a dually G5. You will not be sorry. At least, I'm not.
I have yet to actually get to a point where I have to back off in
terms of the ambitiousness of the project.

Thanks for the advice. I got the G5 2.5 dually today ... what a beast! I can't believe how fast this machine is processing my usual stuff.
