So I'm just curious-- outside of video games, in what other way would an iMac benefit from additional video ram? In other words, what justification do I have for ordering the 256mb version over the 128? Are there any other apps that will benefit significantly from this?

3D programs benefit too like Maya and CAD software. Also, it helps if you have a high resolution display as things like expose might be a bit smoother but I imagine that 128 would handle most situations just fine.

Possibly doing CoreImage effects on the graphics card on high-res images in apps like Aperture would benefit too.

If you're not into high-end gaming or CoreImage stuff, I'd say the 128MB is enough.

i also got it for resale value. by the time that this goes up on the auction block, the 256mb vram will make it stand out (so i am paying a lot more so i can get a little more, go figure)

i plan to use this mac until at least 10.6
UI virtualization is something that i hope happens in leopard, but it'll come in handy whenever it comes around.
