I have an interesting purchase decision here.

Here are my options:

Apple Cinema Display 23" and newest-edition PB G4
iMac Core Duo 17" and newest-edition PB G4
MacBook Pro

I do mostly HTML work, Photoshop, plus all the everyday things (word process, iChat, Safari).

Which set up would be most benefitial to me as a Mac user?

id go with the the imac core duo 17" and pb g4 if i were you. nothing better than having a decent to fast machine at home, and a notebook for on the go. infact if i were you, id get the imac core duo and ibook and a dell 2005fp to span on with either machine, that way you get decent real estate, a fast machine at home, and a decent on the go machine, but thats just one users opinion. i have a powerbook (specs in sig) a dell display i connect it to, the only thing im missing is the 17" imac core duo that i havnet ordered just yet. i cant wait till i do though .

i would also have to say an imac + pb g4 because then you get both ppc and intel. you never know what little programs you need that are incompatible with intel.

besides, if pragmaticism is important to you, then i would go for a dell monitor. more inputs, cheaper, 1 inch larger. there is no reason to get an apple (except for snob-appeal/aesthetics) but hey, to some people, image IS everything.

I recently debated getting a MacBook to replace my Powerbook (mostly desk-bound). I ended up getting a 20" iMac and use my Powerbook for portability. I think this is the best way to maximize use of both of your computers, while getting more bang for your buck in terms of performance and features in the iMac. If I had replaced my PB with a MBP, I would never use my PB, but now I still use it from time to time. I'd go with option #2 ... are you talking about getting two new computers at once? I personally wouldn't buy a G4 notebook anymore. Apple is rumored to come out with new iBook replacements this spring, so maybe that and a iMac would be best.

It could be a placebo effect, I guess, but looking at an Apple monitor and a Dell monitor side by side, I like the picture on the Apple one better. Don't know who supplies their LCDs, but they seem really nice.

Nothing better than having both a desktop and a notebook. I'm in that boat right now. Kick ass intel iMac and slow g4 powerbook for travel and note taking.

I'd suggest a third option.

20" iMac core duo
12" iBook

Nothing beats having a really nice display at home...and you can't BEAT the 12" iBook for portability and affordability. This is EXACTLY the combo I have right now and I am very happy with both!

i agree

what's the point of a portable if it's not portable ?

my brother has the 17" and quite frankly it's stupidly big , virtually unportable imo
