Hi all, my name is melanie, I'm new on the mac and I love it but I do have a problem.
I have a G4 flat screen with a dvd r-rw, I am trying to record a disc which I had coppied for me as I am a airbrush artist, the disc will copy, but will not re copy the disc keeps spitting out, I am not sure if I am doing this write.

can any one give me a step by step instructions, I have just bought the new toast 7 and popcorn.
any help would be fanstastic.

Mel

Hi and welcome.

Firstly, Macs don't support "packet writing" where you can insert CD-R/RWs or DVD-R/RWs and overwrite/add to the data that is already there (and there are good reasons for this, not least that it is highly prone to failure leaving you with unreadable discs).

Secondly, they do support the writing of sessions which means you can record onto the disc numerous times, but each recording is as a new session (essentially it means that the disc is split up into partitions, with each partition representing each time you burn to the disc - like a video tape where you have recorded more than one film... the second and third films are appended at the end of the prior one).

The default Finder burn process creates discs that are "closed" and cannot be re-burnt with new sessions. That is, it will only allow one session per disc, no matter how small or how big it is.

Wrt your problem, it is likely that the disc was created as a closed session meaning that it can't be added to any more. If it is a RW disc, don't panic as you can recover from this but it does mean that you will have to wipe the disc first - I don't have Toast to provide the exact details but this is the core of it:

1. First - copy everything that is on the DVD onto your hard drive (assuming you have the space to do so). Check that the files open OK and that the back up has worked before proceeding.

2. Use Toast to erase the DVD-RW.

3. Choose to burn the data back to the disc but before you burn it, make sure you choose not to close the session (It could either say something like "Don't close session/disc" or "Leave session/disc open" - I don't know how Toast phrases this). This will leave the disc open and burn-able with new sessions.

4. When you have burnt the disc this time, the next time you want to add data and burn it, a new session will be created and appended to the one that already exists.

HTH.

Edit: Whenever you burn a new disc (CD-R or RW or DVD R or RW) always choose to leave it open unless you specifically want to prevent it being written to again for whatever reason.
