I got my 17" about a month ago, and had to format it within the week... then again a week or so later. Right after reinstalling everything was fine and SUPER fast, but yet again it is now quite slow. Running Disk Utility causes the entire machine to completel lock/freeze for about 60 seconds, same with any Installer- Including the OS 10.4 installer running from CD. The hard drive grinds alot and is clearly the cause of delays in application launches, etc.
So, I feel pretty strongly that I have a defective drive... I took my iMac apart, as hard as it was, to try and put my 250GB Hitchi in.. didn't work (then tried it in a PC, didn't worth either.. so, I shipped it back yesterday!) I am concerned whether disassemblying it may have voided my warranty?
Anyone else have any problems like this or am I an isolated incident?
It just so happen that my iMac has a Maxtor hard drive...... damn you maxtor...

My 20 inch has also been nothing but heavenly. All of this sounds very "logic board" related. Call AppleCare. The sooner the better.

I have a deeling that disassembling something voids the warranty, but call Apple as soon as you can.

What ever you do do not tell Apple that you took apart your core duo, if you do they’ll blame you for damaging the computer.

Sorry dude. You're an idiot. Taking your machine apart when it's still under warranty? That's just plain dumb.
To be on topic, my iMac hasn't had a problem, but I don't expect it to since it's only 2 weeks old.

It's not that stupid. Apple has only recently dropped it's "fix your own iMac" program. On my revA and my RevB, I was asked to take the back off over the phone by applecare staff. On my RevA I had the infamous white line and had to replace the LCD, myself, twice! Then I had to replace the logic board to try to reduce fan noise, of course that was an apple design fault which was never fixed as far as I know. On my RevB I had to take off the back and reset the SMU before they would accept it in for repair for a washed out screen. Note, they said it was fine in the end, even though I have 3 G5iMacs side by side and it is definately weak. iMacs are a wonderful concept, now that I have a 20inch RevC to compare them all to.

I ordered mine the day of the announcement adn received it 1/16. It got a little slow after about two weeks of adding stuff, but then I upgraded to 2 GB of RAM and all is well again.
Every once in a while I notice that there is more RAM showing as active than the individual threads add up to (800-900 meg) and I can't figure out what's causing it. When that happens, it can slow down a little, but a reboot fixes it. (And it reboots so fast...)
