I would like to see some real world test before I celebrate this announcement. Although I am the edge of my seat for welcome addition of Core Duo, Optical in/out, expanded memory, faster bus (667) and 4 USB ports; but I am bit concerned about the GPU; not because I want to play games. I want this little puppy hooked up to my LCD TV playing my videos and music.

I've been able to speak with someone at Apple who had access to the new minis for testing, so I can comment on video playback to a degree. Both models had 1 GB of RAM.
1.5 GHz Solo: Will play H.264 video properly at widescreen 480p (720x480). 720p stutters in fast-action scenes.
1.66 GHz Duo: Will play H.264 properly at 480p and 720p, though the latter is cited as being "on edge" (i.e. that it could start dropping frames if it was asked to do much more).
So I'd say the rule of thumb is this: if the most you'll do is to rip your (legally-acquired!) DVDs to the hard drive and play them, then you can get away with the base model - though you may want more storage. If you're going to play 720p content, you'll simply need the Core Duo model.

I'd really like this as a home-media, networked living room device. It falls a bit short - I want it to easily handle 720p, preferably it could handle 1080p, which means faster chip/GPU, and its too expensive. I'd like it in the 499 range. So I figure in about a year, the proc speed, and total cost, might make down to where I want to be...

Questionable information... my 1.86Ghz PM plays 720p H.264 with CPU load around 70%, so the single 1.5 should be able to just make it. The 1.83 and 2.0Ghz Duos are reported to play multiple 1080p H.264 streams fine, so the 1.66 Duo should have no problem with playing one 1080p stream.
