Hi all,

Having just bought a new 20 inch iMac Core Duo I find myself with a Rev A single proc G5 PM. Seeing as though I don't have a buyer for it I was wondering if you had any suggestions as to what I can use it for.

One of the current thoughts going round in my head is to stick 2 whopping great hard drives in it and put it upstairs as a server/media server, especially now that Apple have updated Frontrow.

Suggestions? Ideas?

TIA

Alistair

Lots of ideas:

-Media server connected to your main box via firewire.
-BOINC cruncher for various projects
-Local house server for iTunes audio files - keep them off your main box!
-Live 24/7 backup!

Or:
-Consider donating the machine to a school or other organization
that utilizes Macintosh.

Firewire connection is a no go since if I go with the media server idea it wuld be located upstairs away from my iMac linked only by Airport.

What's BOINC?

iTunes server sounds good but isn't that a bit of a waste?

24/7 backup? How?

Thanks for the suggestions, keep em coming!

Yeah I had considered ebay but I want it to go to a good home

iMac is already all maxed out on RAM although another monitor may be an idea.

I just thought there may be some novel or interesting use for it that I hadn't already considered.

You could load it up with hard drive storage, buy and Elgato capture device, and use it as a TiVo box.

It also works well as a boat anchor.

lol@boat anchor

Can't think of anything I want to buy for my iMac, as I said it already has 2 gig of RAM.

What kind of price realistically woul I get on ebay? Is £600 about right?

Drop me a line, i'll pay for shipping and you can give it to me, i'll make sure to do one or two projects on it for non-profits.

I'd keep it as a media server and if you do any photoshop, I'd use it for that until PS C3 Universal arrives.

Depends what you do with your iMac. If you spend much time encoding video for example, you could use Compressor and batch processing to get the G5 to help with the task.
Look into Xgrid, you may be able to speed up some of your other projects too. Then you can run it as a server as well.

Basically, anything which is embarrassingly parallel. Believe it or not that IS the technical term.
Basically anything which can be broken down into sections, processed, then re-assembled to get the correct result.

Video processing I've mentioned, though people who do that tend to have FCP, and therefore can do this without using Xgrid. Batch image processing can also be done. Rendering CG animation is another popular one. I believe Xgrid is built into Xcode these days for compiling code.

As for specific applications, it helps if they are scriptable, even more so if they have command line tools.

There is a mailing list for questions if you need help getting something to work. It can be quite complicated to get a particular setup working as you need, but once you have done it, it comes in very handy.

If you are going to use it as the media server, upgrade the graphics card to one of the high end ATI cards, get a TV tuner card cause they still support the earlier generation of the PowerMac's, you can even put Front Row on your PowerMac and I would have a 5.1 hooked up to it along with a plasma if you have either of the two for the ultimate media mac.

So far I've gotten to the stage of installing OS X Server on it and am currently struggling to set it up.

"How do I get my client Macs to automatically login to the server?"

Is just one question I'm struggling with....sigh....
