I think the Mini is just great. i own a G4 mini already. The new Intel Mac Mini uses a SATA HD. One thing I'd like to be able to do is add a decent 500GB HD to the mini. This would be easy if a 2' long SATA cable could be brought out from inside the Intel Mini. Electrically this sounds easy. Does anybody know how or if this could be done mechanically with the new Mini? Perhaps one of the Mini accessory companies would do this.

Any ideas?
thanks.

You'd have to cut a hole in the side of the case (or break off one of the other ports on the back), but yes, I think it can be done.

Pull the cable through the vent holes out the back.

SATA is the native mode of the modern SATA HDs. Firewire is only supported with an adapter card to IDE drives. The drive utilities work well with SATA drives where with Firewire I find myself taking the drives out of the firewire enclosures to fix disk problems. I own 4 FIrewire external enclosures with HDs in them (as well as 2 USB2 enclosures). I also have an external SATA enclosure with drives. SATA is faster by 3 times and much more reliable.

My question is: Is there a place in the Mac Mini to plug in a longer SATA cable? Or is the SATA cable that is internal wired into some unfortunate connector or connection?

Basically, SATA is designed to be a "next generation" drive interface, allowing the same interface card/motherboard connector to support both internal and external drives. If there's an extra SATA port inside the new Mini's case, it would be wonderful to be able to make it available externally for lots more, and easily connected and removed storage.
