so i decided to do a couple benches in illustrator with my powerbook and imac. specs are as follows:

powerbook
1ghz g4
40gb hd 4200rpm
1.25gb of ram

imac core duo
1.83 intel core duo
160gb hd 7200rpm
512mb of ram

powermac
2ghz dual core g5
160gb hd 7200rpm
2.5gb of ram

for the first test, i setup identical 'actions' in both my powerbook and imac (one 1"x1" box created, copied over .2" horizontally 100x, select all, copy over .2" vertically 100x, select all, move .2" horizontally and .2" vertically 10x. i call this 1" x 1" (100 x 100 x 10).

powerbook: 1:24 min
imac: 1:39 min
powermac: 1:14 min

for the next test i deselected the image that the first action created and simply chose select all from the edit menu.

powerbook: 33 sec
imac: 4 sec
powermac: 2 sec

the next test had me delete the image after i selected all. both machines did this in 1 sec, so no results are needed for this test.

the next test involved selecting the undo function from the edit menu after deleting the image created.

powerbook: 39 sec
imac: 16 sec
powermac: 12 sec

the next test was for me to fill the same image with the color 'light green' (both images were already selected).

powerbook: 14 sec
imac: 18 sec
powermac: 13 sec

next test involved shrinking the image (with light green fill) to 25% of its original size.

powerbook: 17 sec
imac: 16 sec
powermac: 10 sec

and the final test was for me to rotate said image by 95% degrees (arbitrary number).

powerbook: 33 sec
imac: 32 sec
powermac: 13 sec

now im no expert, and i dont know how valid these tests are or what they prove, all i know is i tested a few things that i normally do in illy to see the raw speed of both machines compared. i know rosseta runs faster with lots more ram, and im getting my 1gig soon...which means ill post my results as soon as its inserted and tested.

PLEASE!!!!! i dont want people telling me that these tests dont mean a thing, like i stated before...these are typical actions i do while working in illy (albeit not as complicated) and did this for myself but decided that the macnn forums might be interested. im willing to run actions if you have any good ones in mind.

might i say, im pleased with the outcome from the imac, i know once ram is added it'll only get faster, and once cs 3 is released it'll get another kick in the pants .
