Hey all,

My mom finally got her iPod today and is now syncing (monitoring it over VNC since she is on the Island). Slow it sure is. I know there are all these sleep problems with cards and I need one that won't that problem and meet these requirements.
  • Will deep sleep with iPod and Flash drive connected
  • Wake from Deep Sleep with iPod and Flash drive connected
She is extremely computer illiterate so having to play with the cables every time she needs to use her iPod etc is not an option period. Would connecting a USB 2 powered hub solve the sleep issue? If so this is acceptable (I also need the USB2 PCI for my MDD (exact same setup).

Thanks

Adaptec Makes a USB PCI card that's pc/mac right out of the box. Never had anyt problems with it in X. I'm using it in my MDD right now.

check the Startech PCISAT2F3U4 if you price search on this you can find it in the $40 + range that is hardly more than the USB alone... if you look at long term could be a good strategic move...

http://startech.com/ststore/itemdeta...T2F3U4&mt=

on some websites it is advertised as Win compatible, if you get there product manual you will see it is MAC compatible out of box, and is sold at mac only sites too.

it gives USB 2, FW, AND SATA internal so you can throw a fast hard drive in there which would bypass the old ATA/66 controller which strangles hard drive speed (unless of course you only use an ATA/66 hard drive...oddly enough, some OEM hard drives shipped are faster than the controller shipped with...uuuggghhhhh...

That is a great card. I would get 2 of them if they could be found in stock somewhere. Buy.com is the cheapest place to find them.

Pretty much any NEC chipset based USB 2 card will work. Phone around your local PC dealers. Price should be in the 15-25CAN$ range. But if you want one that is not likely to cause sleep issues, then a 'made for mac' card is probably better. Sleep is a hit and miss issue.

Apple had a support article at: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93405 but it appears to be missing

About the Hub. Any powered hub should work, but probably won't cure the sleep problem. They are cheap, though. And you can move the cables to an easier to get at location.

Oh, I forgot to mention. Multifunction cards (like the Firewire/USB/SATA card described) are more likely to cause problems than normal cards because of their onboard PCI-PCI bridge.

Does this card actually allow you to boot drives on the SATA? Frankly, I am surprised that the SATA on this card works at all. I am intrigued. Can you give more info?
