What's the best card that I can get for my machine? Right now it has the stock ATI Radeon 9650. My Power Mac is an older model dual 2ghz with only 4 RAM slots.

Thanks,

B

The ATi X850XT and nVidia 6800U are the best cards available for your Mac.
Which one is better for you depends on the apps you use; see Barefeats for benchmarks.

Is this card available anywhere? I can't find a Mac version at any of the usual online retailers.

That's because the X850XT was only offered BTO by Apple. There's no way to buy it. The Apple 6800 cards were offered as an upgrade, but I believe they're EOL'd. You might find one, but you'll have to do a bit of looking. The person who told you they're available was simply incorrect.

The ATI offers the X800, which you will be able to find. It's just a hair slower than the X850.

I purchased an ATI x800XT for my Duel 2Ghz, G5. I have to say I love it. I run motion and Final cut on my machine and it runs smooth as silk. This is the card that you want if you do those kind of application or play games on yoru mac as well with a nice 23'HD Cinema Display.

I got my revA 2.0 duallie with a 9800Pro. A few months ago I got a 256MB X800XT and was very impressed. Doom3 runs just a tad slower than on my MacBook with a 256MB X1600. IMO ATi has better drivers and support than the nVidia catds on a Mac...

There are two or three on ebay right now (if eBay is a valid option for you), this one has a great price:
