In expecting to receive my refurb Dual 2ghz G5 with a stock GeForce 5200 video card, I am wondering if it is worth purchasing a better video card for the Mac.
So it has AGP slot and all. Do you think there will be anymore AGP graphics cards yet to be released? I kind of doubt it, but it would be a nice thing to do for the tons of customers who don't have the latest Macs. An affordable agp video card.
Is it worth upgrading the video card? I don't do any gaming at all. No 3D rendering either. Basically, I just encode movies, edit video, and the basic normal use. But I do watch a lot of HD content on it. Will it be ok?
Because I would like to not have to upgrade the card until the X850XT or 6800Ultra become cheaper for me. The max I'd like to spend on a video card is always $150. Because they become so outdated, so fast in the PC world. Is it the same as the Mac world?

Now that the industry is focusing on PCIe instead of AGP, the AGP cards available aren't becoming outdated by new AGP models, but they are becoming outdated by PCIe models (not sure if you would "count" that since, you can't use them). There is one faster AGP card available for PCs (7800GS), but I doubt we'll ever see it available for Macs.
$150 won't buy you much in the Mac video card world; most of the Mac cards have 30-180% markup over their PC siblings. Even a 9600 Pro (a modest upgrade from your 5200, but still the middle-of-the-line card from 3 generations ago) is >$150 for Macs.

I've just put an AGP ATI 9800 in my dual 2gig G5, and Wow! What a difference over the GeForce - its so much smoother/faster in everyday use, I'm amazed! I can only recommend it. I'd pick one up before the AGP version is hard to find.

Actually, you can find G5 compatible cards for cheap on eBay and the like. If you take a half step up to a 9600 series card or 6600, then you can save big $$$. I've picked up a few 9600s with 64Mb, 128Mb and a 9650 with 256Mb for around 80USD with post.

If you don't need DVI, there are numerous reports of PC Radeon 9800Pro working in G4 and G5 machines after flashing with a modified firmware - check out http://strangedogs.proboards40.com
9800Pro would be a good step up from your FX5200 and should only cost you about $100 right now.
