Just wanted to pose a question as to whether anyone here would keep a Macbook Pro at $1870 vs an iMac 20" at $900, given the same 2.0ghz Core Duo configuration. I am leaning towards the iMac for the time being but wanted to get some other opinions.
Thanks

im confused by your question...are you saying you could get a 20" imac for 900 dollars whereas the mac book pro will cost you $1870? thats a no brainer, get the imac if that indeed is the case. in all the benchmarks ive read, the imac has barely scored higher than the mac book at identical clock speeds, my guess is the gpu in the imac is slightly better in the imac, along with a faster hard drive

No, no typo. U guys just confirmed what I was thinking, so I will go with the iMac at $900. The two machines were the 20" iMac with the Core Duo processor and 250gb drive and the 2.0ghz Macbook (both stock machines).
I asked the question because I was getting such a good deal on both, so I wanted to make sure I wasn't choosing the wrong one of the two in trying to save extra money. And unfortunately, one comes at the expense of the other.

Ya, lower than what it costs to produce. I'd say great deal. Just remember to get a receipt when you wire the money to Singapore, okay?

I was able to purchase an iMac and a Macbook Pro from Amazon with a special deal. Selling the Macbook will allow me to lower the cost of the iMac to $900. Nothing illegal, just luck.

Well, in that case, if you don't need to be portable, which I assume that you do not, get the iMac.

Yeah, I would prefer a portable Mac, but it doesn't make sense right now, since I have a decent enough *cough* Windows laptop that does the job for work. When this dies, I will switch to the Macbook (maybe sooner). If Apple ever comes out with a tablet, I am ditching super fast.

That right there is an iBook-based Tablet Mac.
You may consider getting the MacBook and a docking station. There should be some third parties that make them soon. The MacBook is roughly as fast as the iMac, so you could make your life simpler (and probably cheaper in the long run) by just getting the MacBook and using it both at home and not.

They make docking stations for iBooks and Powerbooks, so I see no reason why a MacBook Pro version would not be in the works. That would be great for you because then you could get an external mouse, keyboard, and monitor for desktop use and you wouldn't have to worry about keeping things in sync as far as the laptop/desktop is concerned. I plan on doing something like that very soon when the smaller MBPs come out. I want one for school.

if you can save money on the imac, why dont' you flip it and calculate what the MBPro is going to cost you if you sell the iMac . . . . personally, i have an iMac at home, but still use my laptop more because I hate the confinement of a desk . . .

That's how I got to the original prices (considering that I was flipping the Macbook). On top of everything I just sold an older imac G4 for $450, so my cost to own is even less (around $1400 for the Macbook pro).
