Aesthetics aside, is there an extender cable to allow you to throw away the silly 2.5" drive and connect a 3.5" drive outside the Mac... yes I am willing to cut a hole in the case so that I can put a 300G drive on this without an external FW/USB enclosure. (the fact that Apple stuck with the slow/expensive @#%@#$% notebook drives instead of switching back to 3.5" drives upsets me much more than the integrated graphics controversy)

thanks,
Mike

There are a lot of different SATA cables around in a lot of different lengths. At a small computer show this past weekend, I saw SATA cables for sale in lengths from about 12" to about 30". Note that you need two (albeit small) cables for a SATA drive; one for data and one for power; I would expect an external SATA enclosure to have the power end handled.

The real question is whether or not there is a second SATA data port and power port. Sure, you could do what you say and eliminate the laptop drive (that you've already paid for), but wouldn't it be much better to keep that for some functions and just add a humongous external drive? I personally think that would be better.

Has anyone opened up a new Mini to see what unused ports there are?

You'll still need some way to get power to the drive (the mini is designed for 2.5W drives, not 12.5W), so you may need an external case anyway (although you can get one of the relatively inexpensive SATA-SATA cases).

FYI SATA is limited to 39" (1m) cables.

Are the USB 2.0 drives are slow?

I'm trying to evaluate my options now that my Mini has arrived.

Thanks,
Mike
