hi

can mixing 32x64 ram with 16x64 cause system errors and crashes?

I have a blue & white powermac (g4 400mhz zif upgrade) all of the ram modules are 256mb PC100

however two are Siemens 16x64 and two are unlabelled 32x64 - whenever I have all of them in together - I get constant system crashes, but when I have just two of each it works fine

My B&W was just like yours, it would run fine as long as all the chips were the same, but would crash like doodoo when confronted with a mixture

I tried all sort of combinations, but ended up buying 4x 256mb, 32X64 chips back when the PC100 prices bottomed out @around $17.00 each, and notta problemo from then on....

I installed 3 512 and the 256 that came with the machine (G4 dual 867 Mirror door), I remember seeing somewhere that you needed to install ram stick in twos. Is this accurate, my Mirrror door seems to be working fine. Cheers.

Go to the User CP, edit the sig and use the button for the image to link to your image (it must be on the web). Check the sticky about how large the image can be.

Macs are funny about ram. Test, retest, and find what works for you. It is possible that you are getting problems due to logical boundries crossing over modules. Try a different order.

But RAM is cheap now. Probably for $50 you can fix your problems

Powerbook Pismo G3 400MHz, 768MiB RAM, 80Gb HDD, AirPort Extreme PC Card, Bluetooth 1.1, DVD-ROM, OS X 10.4.6, Ubuntu 5.10, MacOS 9.2.2
