Hi guys, I just bought a G5 iMac (iSight 20") which I love. The only thing is I would like to be able to use my 23" monitor for spanning while doing audio work. I heard there is a hack out there to enable this function...though I'm not sure where to find it.

My questions would be:

1) Where can I find the hack?

2) How well does this work?

3) Is it safe?

4) What is the max res a hacked iMac can support on an external display?

5) If there are several hacks out there for this, is one better/safer than the others?

Thanks in advance for your help.

This is where you will find it:-

http://macparts.de/ibook

Also see:-

http://www.rutemoeller.com/mp/ibook/supportlist_e.html - your machine is listed.

Have a read of the forums to see what users think. I don't have an iMac but it has worked fine on my eMac when I had desk space for the extra monitor.

Good luck, I think you will need an adaptor as well.

Sorry I don't have answers to all your questions, though on no 4 - I remember being able to get at least 1920x1600(?) on mine - I was quite surprised my old external CRT could support it.

Go to VersionTracker and look for SpanDoctor . . . . it's simple and legit. I did it the first day I got my iMac! Let me know if you need anything else.

*Edit - Just checked VersionTracker and it seems it's not there anymore. I'll try to post a download of it on my site later today when i get home to my iMac if you're still going to look for it"

I have not read of it doing any damage to any iMacs - I think there was a problem with some early iBooks, but I think the website is just making it clear that it is your responsibilty. Have the forums got any posts from any users who have broken iMacs?
