After running my intel imac for a few hours i have noticed that i cannot empty the trash!

Today i had my machine running for about 3hrs tried to delete 3 4kb files and trash froze saying preparing to delete files. I tried to hit cancel no effect. I tried force quit relaunch finder and finder never relaunched. I was looking at a blank desktop image without a menubar. I had to hold down the power button. I turned the imac back on right-click on trash hit empty trash and instantly it was emptied.

This is a trend i noticed over and over again. I've come to a point where i restart b4 i empty the trash.

Is this normal behavior?
